According to the Farmer's Almanac, the Dog Days of Summer are the hottest and most humid days of the year, between July 3rd and August 11th. In the summer, Sirius, the Dog Star, rises and sets with the Sun. On July 23rd, specifically, it is in conjunction with the Sun. Thus, the term Dog Days of Summer came to mean the 20 days before, and the 20 days after this date. In Greek astrology this period was connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck. |
